There is no shortage of people who desperately need help and attention. At Phillips Charitable Foundation, rather than focusing on a single demographic such as seniors or children, we focus on the most vulnerable of society. In our fall 2021 grant cycle this resulted in five grants, totaling $264,500, to nonprofit organizations serving adults and children with physical and mental challenges. Each of the organizations also provides support for the families who are often providing much of the care. The services offered by these organizations enable those with physical and mental challenges to live as independently as possible, be included in the community, and function at their highest potential.
Life's Work of Western PA

Life’s Work of Western PA partners with people with disabilities and other barriers, helping them to pursue their hopes and dreams. They accomplish this through strengthening workplace abilities, building life skills, and developing meaningful relationships. Life’s Work serves approximately 2,000 clients a year ranging from youth as young as 14 to adults. Phillips Charitable Foundation awarded a grant to Life’s Work in 2019 to begin a three-year technology upgrade for their organization. This recent $50,000 award will enable them to complete this important three-year project.

Bello Machre’s mission is to make a lifetime commitment of providing loving care, opportunity, and guidance to people with developmental disabilities in Maryland. The $116,500 grant will be used for the down payment for the next state-of-the-art, fully accessible home, which will be named in honor of Howard W. Phillips, Jr., the benefactor of the Phillips Charitable Foundation. Located in Hanover, MD, the property will be the forever home for four adults in critical need of accessible housing. An open house and dedication will follow in Spring 2022. An accessible home helps ensure the individuals are in a safe environment so they can thrive and be as independent as possible.

OBI’s mission is to support youth and adults with disabilities to experience full inclusion in their communities as they learn, work, and pursue their paths to personal success. A $48,000 grant was awarded to repurpose their facility in order to comply with new state and federal regulations. The funds will also enable them to provide a higher quality of service to the nearly 300 individuals with disabilities who rely on their support. Specifically, they plan to modernize their Career Center by adding laptops to the existing computer lab, and adding smart tv’s and technology to enhance in-person learning and enable hybrid instruction throughout the building. They also plan to use the funds for building repairs and upgrades.
Angela's House

Angela’s House assists families caring for children with special health care needs that are medically fragile, chronically ill or living with a life threatening illness. They offer a variety of home care assistance programs, helping families by coordinating the extensive array of services needed to support medically frail children at home. They also have three residential homes where children are cared for in a warm and loving home environment that is suited to accommodate their complex physical and medical needs. Angela’s House was awarded $25,000 for their respite care services. Respite care services provide families a break from the overwhelming day to day efforts of caring for their medically frail child.

Insight Memory Care Center is a nonprofit adult day health and resource center providing specialized care, support, and education for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and other memory impairments, their families, caregivers, and the community. Serving Northern Virginia since 1984, Insight offers a spectrum of holistic care, with a vision of a community where those affected by memory impairments can achieve the highest quality of life. The need for their services continues to grow. As a result, they will be expanding to Sterling, Virginia. The $25,000 grant will help with this expansion.
