Phillips Charitable Foundation is a proud supporter of nonprofits serving the unique needs and challenges of our military, first responders, and veterans. These brave men and women have dedicated their lives to protecting our health, lives, freedom, and nation. We look for funding opportunities that serve to honor their sacrifices as well as solve a myriad of challenges they face. Thus far, four of our 2023 grants have been awarded to nonprofits serving those who have sacrificed so much for us. From service and companion dogs, to care packages, to preserving history, we’re pleased to announce the following grants.
Paws of War
New York
Paws of War serves our active-duty troops, veterans, and first responders. They train and place shelter and support dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans who suffer from the emotional and physical effects of war. They also provide animal rescue for our active duty troops serving overseas. Military personnel often rescue and take in homeless dogs or cats while serving overseas. A request can be put in with Paws of War to have that animal transported back to the United States.
Paws of War was awarded with a $5,000 grant for their Vet-2-Vet Clinic. This clinic is designed to provide comprehensive veterinary care and support services to retired military personnel and their service animals. Many veterans face financial challenges in accessing quality veterinary care. The Vet 2 Vet Clinic bridges this gap and ensures that our veterans and their service animals receive the care they deserve. The grant will cover the costs of wellness and vaccination exams along with medication and microchips if needed. The Paws of War staff and volunteers are a dedicated team and we’re honored to add them to our family of grantees.
American Veterans Center
Washington, D.C.
A $25,000 grant was awarded to the American Veterans Center for the Veterans Oral History Preservation project. This is our second grant for this exciting project. Heroic veterans with remarkable stories share their experiences on video. Most of the videos have focused on WWII veterans.
The mission for American Veterans Center is to guard the legacy and honor the sacrifice of American veterans from the last 75 years.
The oral history videos are available to all on the American Veterans Center YouTube Channel. The recorded stories ensure that the experiences, sacrifices, and lessons our veterans have learned will not be forgotten. We recommend that you take a few moments to watch some of these inspiring and eye-opening videos. We enjoy each and every one.
The videos of Jim Lovell and Ronald Webb in the photos above are available now as well. Jim Lovell is both a veteran pilot of the U.S. Navy and is the famed commander of the Apollo 13 mission. His story was later portrayed by Tom Hanks in the movie Apollo 13. Ronald Webb is a veteran of Vietnam and a long-held Prisoner of War after being shot down over North Vietnam. Incredible stories!

Hero Dogs
Maryland
Hero Dogs was awarded a $13,500 grant. Hero Dogs raises, trains, and places service dogs and companion dogs free of charge to veterans of the U.S. military and first responders with disabilities. This recent grant is for continued funding for Hero Dog Cassie. We’ve been supporting Cassie since her arrival to Hero Dogs as a small puppy. Cassie is now in year two of her 2 ½ to 3-year training program.

Peggy Stewart Tea Party Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution
Maryland
The Peggy Stewart Tea Party Chapter of DAR was formed in Annapolis in 1898. Their name comes from an event that occurred in 1774 known as the Annapolis Tea Party, very similar to the more well known Boston Tea Party. A ship named the Peggy Stewart, almost brand new at the time, was destroyed during this event. The ladies who formed the Annapolis Chapter named their group after this ship and historic event.
Through the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Peggy Stewart Tea Party Chapter promotes patriotism, support for veterans, and education. We awarded the Peggy Stewart Tea Party Chapter with a $2,500 grant. The grant is for the contents and preparation of Patriot Project Care Packages. Volunteers put together care packages and send them overseas to our troops, providing them with comfort and connection from their homeland.
On behalf of Phillips Charitable Foundation, we thank these four outstanding nonprofit organizations for their dedication and focus on frontline heroes. We’ve enjoyed learning more about their work and wish them our heartfelt congratulations on their well-deserved grants.
